Question: What about science fascinates you (or more simply, what do you like about science)?
Answer: EVERYTHING around us involves science. Using science we can answer almost any question and solve any problem. Our responsibility is to learn how to use scientific principles to create solutions to the problems and concerns that affect the world today.
Question: What hobbies or extra-curricular activities do you enjoy and why?
Answer: I absolutely love to play basketball! I play on a city team and hope to play on the Jr. High team next year. I began playing basketball with my father when I was in kindergarten and have enjoyed it ever since. The competition in a basketball game excites me and I enjoy trying to control the ball and make it do everything that I want it to do. This actually involves a lot of science principles! I also enjoy swimming because I love the feel of the water as I try to move through it quickly. My favorite strokes to do are backstroke and freestyle. I love to play the piano. I take piano lessons and practice everyday. I love the challenge of a new song. When I am feeling stressed or overwhelmed, I like to sit down at the piano and play until I feel calm and relaxed. I will play the cello next year in the Jr. High orchestra and am so excited to learn a new instrument! In my spare time I like to sew, crochet, and cross-stitch. I actually find that I use my math skills when I create new sewing projects. I recently taught a class on how to crochet hats. This summer I plan to make hats and bring them to the Women’s and Children’s shelter in the fall.
Question: What career do you want to pursue and why?
Answer: The career that I want to have as an adult is special educator. My mother is a special educator and because of her example I have a love for children with special needs. I currently mentor in the self-contained classroom for children with autism everyday at school. I love the students and I love the challenge of trying to teach concepts in a way that they will understand. This forces me to look at concepts and principles from many different perspectives. I also love the different personalities that each student has. I truly believe that they each have something very unique to offer the world.
Question: What is your favorite school subject?
Answer: I have two favorite school subjects; math and reading. I love math because it makes me think and pushes me to solve difficult problems. My father began teaching me how to solve math problems when I was very young. He would quiz me at night when he came to tuck me in bed. I enjoyed impressing my father with my problem solving skills. I really enjoy reading because it allows me to experience and live the life of someone else for a small period of time. While I am reading, I like to predict what I think will happen next in the story and then read on to compare my predications with what actually happens. My favorite genres to read are mystery and fantasy. I can let my imagination run wild!
