JAI - FIRST BLOG POST

Jai here! I’d like to begin by congratulating my fellow finalists! I am so excited to be ranked alongside such brilliant minds!

Wow! These last two weeks have been pretty busy, but I cannot wait for more! It is truly an honor to be considered one of America’s top young scientists!

I have always been interested in building new inventions and I have been doing so for the past three years. My motivation for creating these inventions has come from looking at problems around me and trying to solve them. One of these ideas came to me when I went to India.

Whenever I visited my grandparents back in New Delhi, India, I was always struck by the huge amount of air pollution. Seeing how my grandfather couldn't even open his windows fearing that the dirty air would enter his home, I knew there had to be a solution. I had heard about the Young Scientist Challenge from my neighbor, and I thought this would be a great problem to address.

I could not believe what I was hearing when I got the call telling me I was a finalist! So far, the coolest part has been speaking to my mentor, Dr. Kris Thunhorst, who I will be working with throughout the summer.
She has a variety of patents including the fillings for cavities in your teeth! She also told me about a project she is working on which utilizes compressed natural gas as a cheaper and more efficient fuel source!

It is unbelievable that as a 12 year old I get to work with someone as amazing as Dr. Thunhorst.

Thank you Discovery and 3M. I cannot wait for the competition in October! I look forward to meeting everyone there.
