HEY, MOM OR DAD! | Having a scientist in your house can be pretty cool. There’s chemistry, problem-solving, inventions, experiments and more. But how often does all that creativity get past the driveway or the backyard? Simple: The Young Scientist Challenge. Backed by Discovery Education and 3M, this annual video competition can help your child meet science fans his or her own age, build an impressive college résumé and even inspire a career in science.
The Young Scientist Challenge is the nation’s premier science for middle school contest. It gives kids like yours the chance to think outside the box and win some unbelievable prizes. Plus, it’s simple to enter. All students in grades 5–8 have to do is send in a short video competition entry on this year’s topic.[link to 2014 challenge/video topics] (Don’t have a fancy video camera? No worries. You can use a smart phone or any other recording device. We judge ideas, not video quality.)
Every year, we pick ten Young Scientist Challenge finalists. They earn exclusive mentorships with real 3M scientists and the opportunity to bring their ideas to life. One winner will even get $25,000 and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Costa Rica.
Finalist or not, the science for middle school competition is a great addition to any college résumé and a fantastic learning experience. (Hear what past contenders have to say!)
