What is your favorite subject in school?:
I have two favorite school subjects; math and reading. I love math because it makes me think and pushes me to solve difficult problems. My father began teaching me how to solve math problems when I was very young. He would quiz me at night when he came to tuck me in bed. I enjoyed impressing my father with my problem solving skills. I really enjoy reading because it allows me to experience and live the life of someone else for a small period of time. While I am reading, I like to predict what I think will happen next in the story and then read on to compare my predications with what actually happens. My favorite genres to read are mystery and fantasy. I can let my imagination run wild!
What career do you want to pursue and why?:
The career that I want to have as an adult is special educator. My mother is a special educator and because of her example I have a love for children with special needs. I currently mentor in the self-contained classroom for children with autism everyday at school. I love the students and I love the challenge of trying to teach concepts in a way that they will understand. This forces me to look at concepts and principles from many different perspectives. I also love the different personalities that each student has. I truly believe that they each have something very unique to offer the world.
Why did you enter in the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge?:
I love science! I love to learn about it and I love to experiment with it. This year I entered the school science fair and won grand prize. I then went on to compete at the district level and eventually won grand prize in my category at the Central Utah Science Fair. During the different competitions I became more and more excited about science and the effect that it has on my life and the life of others. I truly believe that the students today will use science to change the world for the better. I believe that I am a student who can help to lead the way.
What do you enjoy most about science?:
EVERYTHING around us involves science. Using science we can answer almost any question and solve any problem. Our responsibility is to learn how to use scientific principles to create solutions to the problems and concerns that affect the world today.
Anything else you'd like to tell us about yourself?:
I believe that the young students of today will use science to change the world!
