As Week 2 of my summer mentorship is coming to an end, I just can't believe how fast time has flown by! I'm back from my five day vacation to Florida (impressive scenery over there!), so now I can direct my full attention towards my project. :) Read more

Last week, I selected eight observations from the news and identified the problems behind them. This was very time consuming because the news is mostly about sports and celebrities instead of problems that may be solved with scientific solutions. I did not find it difficult to narrow down my project options to three because I know which ones have the greatest potential to change the world, and the ones that I am most interested in. Read more

This is Edward, and I am very excited for the upcoming weeks! I would like to thank Discovery Education and 3M for sponsoring this wonderful competition/program.
My interest has always been toward science and math, and when my science teacher introduced me to this challenge, I was enthralled to participate. Read more

From Connecticut to California, this year’s top young scientists are from all across the country. And from soccer and Taekwondo to orchestra and movie-making, their interests are diverse too. Yet despite their differences, they have one important thing in common: All ten finalists love science! Read more

Hi there this is Jack Andraka from AMAZING MARYLAND. Anyway I still cannot believe that I fly out to St.Paul in only 3 DAYS!!! I am super super excited to meet the other 9 finalists. I'm practicing the presentation of my innovation, and while this does take up a ton of time, I still somehow manage to do all of my homework (which is really hard to do in high school). Anyway I'm giving a special shout out to my mentor Dr. Ylitalo for being the best mentor ever!!! Read more

This is going to be my last blog post. This has been such a great experience for me, as I am sure it has been for all the finalists.
As I mentioned in my last video blog, my favorite part has been working on something that has real world application. I feel like my innovation has the potential to really help people. Along the way, I have learned so much about the process of innovation. I had no idea when I began how many poor ideas one must go through to find a good one. I have come to realize the truth of Thomas Edison’s saying, “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.” I had to put in so much hard work to make my idea work. Read more

Being a top 10 finalist has taken me many places that I never thought I would be. I was interviewed on my local news network WPSD. They asked me questions about the challenge and my project. It was very exciting and interesting to watch the broadcast from the studio. Read more

Hi this is Austin, this video is better this week because we have had success with my project. I was able to talk to my mentor for a long time last night on the phone. He used to be a boy scout and he would get dry ice and put ice cream on it and give it to his fellow boy scouts. When the presentation night comes, he will have dry ice for me to freeze my project quickly with.
My video shows how my project is coming along.
