I just can't believe it- there's only about a month left until the day we are all anticipating! Time is flying so fast and moving so slow at the same time. But before I know it, the big day will have arrived!
Doesn't it seen that time goes by so slowly when you are anxiously waiting for something?
Having a chance to collaborate and interact with a 3M scientist has really been the experience of a lifetime. An amazing opportunity like this doesn't come along often, does it? This summer has been my most memorable one, and I will always cherish the memories I have created. "When opportunity knocks on your door, answer it with a smile." Indeed. Read more

Hello Fellow Scientists,
I've been spending a lot of my time in my room...doing nothing but RESEARCHING!
For the past week I've been trying to become an expert at my topic...which means researching, researching, and even more researching. I don't think I've ever done more researching in my life. Read more

Thomas Edison tried nearly 2000 different filaments for his light bulb before one finally worked. Bill Gates said, "It's fine to celebrate success, but even more important to heed the lessons of failure". My research over the past few weeks has enabled me to experience this lesson first-hand. Where we're going, we don't need roads!
Before experiencing it myself, I thought invention was all about creativity. Why not? It’s definitely a huge part of it—thinking of new, unheard of ways to tackle a common problem. But, again, things aren’t always what they first appear to be. Invention, in practice, is the result of a lot of creativity paired with a TON of knowledge about both the problem itself and the science that makes up your solution. Read more

Wow- time really does seem to fly quickly! With the end of August rolling in, some of us have another exciting thing to look for- a new school year! I'll be expecting new, different challenges, such as juggling my school work and YSC project, and I'm definitely looking forward to my last year in middle school =)

As I struggled through a mental tug-of-war between my final three ideas, Dr. Moran suggested some questions I should ask myself. Not technical or engineering questions. Questions about the world around me. She told me to ask "why?" I realized that it is IMPOSSIBLE to just take each issue at face-value. Each problem has its own set of causes, puzzling together into an issue that's more complex every time you look at it! It's like a cake--there are lots and lots of ingredients that go into the cake, but you REALLY have to know your stuff--observe, ask "why"--to become familiar with the whole recipe. Read more

During this week, I performed more research and brainstormed possible solutions for my three problems. I eventually developed a plausible solution for each concern, and began focusing on one idea. It was a challenging process to pick one out of the three I had selected, but I eventually decided on a single problem to focus on for the rest of the summer. Read more
