This has been a very exciting past couple weeks. I have come up with many great ideas in my scientist’s notebook. I realized that some of the problems affect millions of people, such as the current water shortage in California, and some fewer people, like losing a pet. It was really nice communicating with and getting to know my mentor this week!
I actually found this contest being inspired by my older sister who just recently had won a few science competitions for high schoolers. She made me want to go to a great college and win a scholarship like her. So my parents and I started to look for different scholarships for middle school and I found the young scientist challenge. I have always been fascinated with technology, but I started to get really interested in science over the last two years. I actually entered the Young Scientist Challenge two years ago with an invention made to conserve water for public restrooms. Even though I didn't place, I told myself never to give up and entered again this year. I think perseverance is very important in science and technology research. What an awesome summer this is turning out to be!!! I’m trying out for the school basketball team, I just got back from a great week in Lake Tahoe and most of all, I was chosen as one of the 10 finalists in the Discovery 3M Young Scientist Challenge!!!
I already had a great call with my mentor, Dr. Moran. We discussed the status of the project I submitted and some of the work that I had done since then. She and the rest of the staff have been so friendly and supportive. Read more
