Ana - Planning the Research, Researching the Plan

I have logged alot of hours this week researching, and my project is starting to take form. I can't wait until it's time to experiment!

DAVID - RUNNING EXPERIMENTS

I am working on a solution which helps deal with mosquitoes that may carry malaria or other diseases. Some of the key pieces of information that I needed to complete my design  are not available in the current literature, so I had to conduct these experiments on my own. Dealing with live insects is especially difficult because they may move around and be difficult to collect. Most problems cannot be solved without research, especially when the problem doesn't occur near you and you have never experienced it before. Read more

Mythri - Invention is 20% Research, 30% Creativity and 50% Innovation!!!

Internet, the backbone of modern technology. Internet is what makes most things possible. This week, as I have been continuing my research, I have come to realize the immense value of the irreplaceable internet. As I have been researching the formulae behind complex scientific equations, I have found myself relying more and more on this marvelous invention. Read more

CHRISTOPHER - FINDING MY WAY: RESEARCH

Summer is starting to come to an end, but I could not have asked for a better summer. I am really enjoying my summer mentorship and am grateful to have a mentor as helpful and supportive as Dr. Moran, my mentor. Read more

ANDREW- THE STRUGGLES OF A SCIENTIST

I have been focusing on many different parts of my project this week, such as experimenting, brainstorming, and the scientist’s notebook. Read more

NIKITA - RESEARCH IS THE KEY

Last week I started school, but I still got some research done and even begun experimenting with my idea! Read more

Ana - To Research, To Plan, To Decide

I'm very excited as this is my first ever vlog! Enjoy!

SAHIL - HAVING A 3M MENTOR

Over this past week, I chose one of my three problems to solve and have begun research for plausible solutions. Though I was sad about narrowing my options down to one, I am excited to embark on a quest for a solution to one of the world's biggest issues.

Having a 3M mentor to help is an incredible experience. My mentor, Dr. Jonza, has helped me become a much more global thinker due to his extensive experience as a a scientist in the real world. Also, with a mentor, I can share my ideas and receive instantaneous feedback about them. Read more

MYTHRI - FINDING MY NEEDLE IN THE HAYSTACK OF IDEAS

This week, the time came to finally pick one of my three invention ideas. The process was extremely challenging, but it taught me a lot about innovation.  Read more

NIKITA - MOVING ON FORWARD

This week seems to be going by really fast, since all I have been doing was play tennis and work on the project, but I’m still excited for the next thing to come. Read more

KATHERINE - WORKING WITH A 3M MENTOR

After considering my ideas, I’ve decided on one problem to focus on which was to continue my own original entry topic -- Proactively Prevent Drowsy Driving. When choosing my problems, I considered many factors including different solutions I came up, the importance of the problem, existing solutions.

My mentor Dr. Jesse Miller has been a great help to me!  He is really supportive and guides me in the right direction. It’s really nice to have a real engineer to talk to about my project who gives me good advice. Read more

CHRISTOPHER - SUMMER FUN AND THE SCIENTIFIC PROCESS

I had a very busy week which included going to Santa Catalina Island on Wednesday with my father and some friends. We went to the island by boat and once we got there, we rented a motor boat to go skin diving. We saw a variety of fish, dolphins, seals and even a shark!  We also toured around the island on golf carts.  The whole day was a blast! Read more

ANTHONY - COMING UP WITH SOLUTIONS

Hello everyone,

To focus on one research problem to start working on, I had three ideas in mind. All three were legitimate ideas to begin with, but the one that I believed to be both feasible and had the greatest impact on the world was my idea on hydroplaning.

ANDREW- MAKING GREAT PROGRESS

I have been very busy this week and have had lots of fun so far on this project. I have been working hard on my scientist’s notebook narrowing my ideas down to one.  I chose my original entry idea based on the same guidelines that I had made for myself last week, and I had added some guidelines, such as the availability of materials to follow through with the idea, and how interested in the topic I am. Also, if other solutions exist, how much of an innovation it would be compared to past solutions or ideas. Read more

DAVID - DECIDING ON MY FINAL PROJECT

It's been really good having a mentor to bounce my ideas off of. I really found her advice helpful. Narrowing down my list of problems to just one wasn't too difficult. I chose the problem that seemed most important to me. So far, I have accomplished a lot, building prototypes and doing research. I am really excited to start building my final project! Read more
