Peyton--An Amazing Opportunity

Hi everyone.  I'm Peyton from Florida.  A few weeks ago I received an exciting call from the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge notifying me that I had been accepted as a finalist.   Being selected is truly an honor.  I am extremely thankful to Discovery Education and 3M for sponsoring this competition, feel very privileged to have this opportunity, and I'm super excited to visit the 3M headquarters in October.

I first learned about YSC from the Davidson Young Scholars Program.  I’ve always enjoyed coming up with creative solutions to a challenge or problem.  For example, as golf is my favorite sport, after playing at an out-of-state golf tournament I designed a golf ball warmer to preserve the ball’s temperature and performance in colder environments.  I found that the YSC is perfectly designed for a systematic and scientific approach to problems.

The most challenging part of making the YSC entry video was editing it under two
minutes. Mark Twain famously said “I didn't have time to write a short letter, so I wrote a long one instead.”  When I first assembled the video, it was over five minutes.   The process of editing it down to two minutes forced me to be clearer in my thinking and develop a more precise hypothesis.  After submitting my entry, I waited anxiously
for the announcement from 3M.  After receiving this memorable phone call, my family and I were extremely excited. I even emailed my fifth grade science teacher, Mrs. Kolettis, to share the great news.

Last Friday, I had my first discussion with my mentor, Dr. Cordell Hardy. Dr. Hardy manages the Materials Group in 3M’s Safety & Graphics Business Laboratory.  Dr. Hardy was extremely knowledgeable and nice and I’m eager to work with him and benefit from his expertise this summer.
