Chase - Material Madness

I’ve been brainstorming and brainstorming about materials, new applications, and all sorts of fun stuff. I’ve also been doing a lot of research and starting to collect materials.

You can find resources in the most unusual places! I went to Merritt Store, a great restaurant down the road from my house, and lo and behold, there was a gigantic forest of grass – bamboo, to be specific. Well, it just so happens that I’ve been looking for some bamboo – a material that grows not only in Asia, but also in Africa. Robin Britt, the owner of Merritt Store, really likes my Refugee Travois idea, and told me to help myself to the bamboo. (See my video below of me in the bamboo forest.)

While I was at Merritt Store, I talked with Davidson, who is in charge of the coffee bar. Davidson is from Sierra Leone and was quite interested in the types of wheels I might use for the travois. Sounds like he has quite a lot of experience trying to pull or push loads on African roads and paths.

When I showed Ms. Britt, Davidson, and other Merritt Store employees my 3M Video Camcorder/Projector, they were amazed! There, projected onto the wall, was a video of me in the bamboo forest. They thought the 3M Video Camcorder/Projector was SO COOL!

After I returned from Merritt Store with a delicious bacon, egg, and cheese biscuit in hand, I had my weekly phone call with my 3M Mentor, Dr. Hager. We discussed the 3M materials I might be able to use in building the travois. (This information is classified until……October 16th!)

Next week is going to be a light week, as I’ll be in the mountains and Dr. Hager will be on a canoe trip. Then we’ll be back to it….
