Young Scientist Challenge Week 9

I will upload a new video blog when I get my materials next week!

As of now, this is just pretty much writing. So far the best part of the process so far has been the research. There are so many different ways people could use a potential product and each approach has its own unique quality. When I get my prototype parts then it'll take me quite a while to program and to get it functionally operating within a few weeks. In the mean time, I will start building my presentation as I've had a great deal of time to think about my innovation and expand it.

The most challenging part of this entire process so far has been getting the prototype materials. I had to search through 3M's extensive innovations to find what I needed. After a while, I came up with five different materials that I either needed or thought could improve my prototype. It's my goal to make sure that the product is very different from the scrap pile. I thank Kevin Eberman, my 3M mentor, for taking the time out of his busy work schedule to help me acquire the high-tech materials that are necessary. He has contacted multiple people (sometimes to no avail) and tried to sort out exactly what I need.

In addition, the most frustrating part about the process is the cost of the items. I want readily available high-tech materials I can play around with, but those are hard to obtain. Without the expensive materials, I can't get what I need. My innovation uses different parts of different innovations so integrating them together will be difficult and costly. My mentor will get back to me soon on what he can do for me. If all else fails, I will try to order an expensive kit online within the next few days.

Finally, the most rewarding part about the process is, ironically, the most frustrating part. I like challenges and its an incredible thing to be faced with an obstacle that takes time and energy to move. I look forward to getting my prototype materials soon and building my presentation. I will be incredibly busy this next month, but I will promise to write less and show more!
