Closing Post- Braeden Benedict

Hi everybody!

This is going to be my last blog post. This has been such a great experience for me, as I am sure it has been for all the finalists.

As I mentioned in my last video blog, my favorite part has been working on something that has real world application. I feel like my innovation has the potential to really help people. Along the way, I have learned so much about the process of innovation. I had no idea when I began how many poor ideas one must go through to find a good one. I have come to realize the truth of Thomas Edison’s saying, “Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.” I had to put in so much hard work to make my idea work.

One of the things I am most proud of is also something that I would like to have done a little differently. I kept a very detailed logbook during my project. Everything I did was recorded in there. If I were to do it again, I would have also kept it a little more organized.

The fast approaching event at 3M’s Innovation Center is causing a range of emotions inside me. I’m excited, of course. However, I’m also a little nervous. I still have a lot to do between now and then. I’m working on displays, as well as on perfecting my presentation. I’m sure that it will be a really exciting event.

I just want to take a moment now to recognize all the people who have helped me during my journey.

First, a huge thanks to my amazing science teacher, Ms. Astrid Reichelt, who suggested that I enter this contest.

Thanks to Mr. George Cotou of Globe Scientific for the capillary tube samples he provided.

Thank to Mr. Michael Foster of Shockwatch for the samples he generously provided.

Thanks to Mr. Craig Drager, Mr. Mike Baerg, and Jose G. from Gunther’s Athletic Service for their generosity and time. The helmet testing I conducted at their facility was a key element in my project.

Thanks you, Mom and Dad, for your support and encouragement.

Thank you, Dr. Wolk for your time, guidance, and great advice.

Thank you 3M and Discovery Education for sponsoring the Challenge and creating such a great experience for all the finalists.

Sincerely,
Braeden Benedict
